I had just done something wrong and turned to God for mercy; as usual, guilt started trying to eat me up. In the process of battling with guilt, I started asking myself some questions like; so what else do you want to do now? Do you want to kill yourself? Can you curse yourself when God has blessed you? I started battling with these feelings and confronting them with the word of God, it then dawned on me that the second question I asked myself about wanting to kill myself was actually an option in the real world and many have resorted to oblige. It sounds so funny, in fact, when you watch some suicide video clips, it usually starts up like a joke and then it gets real when the action is taken. No matter the situation, the question is, why would anyone resort to committing suicide? I don’t know what is running through your mind right now or the things you are going through, but if you are reading this and you are having suicidal thoughts, or you have a friend going through such, please before going any further, I just want you to know that there is hope! There is hope! Don’t you ever forget that. This is where others fell, having the feeling of the absence of hope, whereas hope has always been present. All the evil one does is cloud the mind with enough negativity to drive out hope and that settles it, but it is not true, there is hope.
The Phenomenon of Suicide
I have seen a lot of suicide video clips of both young and old (of course I am referring to human beings, do animals commit suicide?). I have read and heard so many stories and they are all heartbreaking in the end. Sometimes it seems like a joke, but then when the action is completed, reality then sets in that someone has actually just taken his/her own life. I mean, when we look at it on the surface, it really doesn’t make sense, but when we look deeper, we then realize that majority are instruments of suicidal thoughts, but the only thing differentiating them from the actual suicide victims is the graduation of the thought pattern, the presence or absence of religious beliefs and the ultimate action.
Suicide in its simplest form means the act of killing oneself intentionally. It is the conscious effort by a human being to end his/her life, thereby killing oneself through any means possible. There are many means by which people commit suicide, the most common ones include: jumping down from the top or high floors of a building, jumping in front of an oncoming train, standing in the middle of the highway, poisoning, overdose, electrocution, stabbing oneself, slitting one’s wrists, shooting oneself, and many more. The point is, when it comes to suicide, there is virtually no way there won’t be a ready means; the devil never disappoints in the provision of such.
Suicide in the mind of the ignorant is seen as a means to end all of life’s sufferings. Some victims even go as far as taking as many lives as possible before taking their own. I can assure you that the fastest route to eternal damnation and destruction is suicide. As many as embark on such journey, there is no negotiation about it, they are ending up in hell. Exodus 20:13 says, “Thou shalt not kill.” You can even be forgiven for taking another man’s life, even though that life that has been taken may be destroyed in hell, but you the killer can still be saved because of the sacrifice of Jesus; but if you take your own life, you are automatically sentencing yourself straight to hell. You didn’t give yourself life so you don’t have the right to end it.
It is very hard to hear of a personal suicide in Africa and in Nigeria most especially, except for the suicidal Islamic groups like “Boko Haram”. This is because of our strong religious beliefs that uphold God. It is almost impossible to hear of a Christian who would commit suicide or become a suicide bomber, suicide bombers are majorly (if not totally) Muslims; yet even other Muslims condemn these suicidal people and claim they are not true followers of Islam. Suicides are more rampant in North America (United States of America most especially), Europe, Asia and other countries filled with atheists and other false religions that go against God. At least I can’t forget the news of popular wrestler, Chris Benoit, who was reported to have killed his wife and son, and then hanged himself to balance the equation, in their home. Not too long ago, I watched the news of a woman jumping to her death with her baby on her chest; thankfully the baby survived.
The Art of Suicide
You see, I have a sister who used to be very stubborn. Back in the days when we were still little (I wanted to say ‘young’ like we are now old), we all had our different levels of mischief. We all had one thing or the other that we were mischievous in, but this my sister was like an all-rounder. One thing that really distinguished her was her usual final resolution after judgment had been passed on her. She would go to the kitchen, shut the door, take a knife, sit down on the floor and just be looking at the knife. I would enter the kitchen and see her sitting on the floor, and I would start laughing and tell her to go outside and accomplish her aim, “It’s not inside this house you’ll kill yourself oh” I would tell her. On other occasions, I could tell her, “Be fast about it, I want to use the knife” or “Shift to one end and continue what you’re doing, you’re blocking the way” and I also remember saying, “Greet our great-grandfather for me when you get there oh”. When she was done meditating with Mr. Suicide, she would stand up, drop back the knife and everything would go back to normal. Now, the only difference between my sister and those who would actually stab themselves is the action.
There are negotiations that ensue in the minds of the victims before the actual action. Many of us are suicidal in nature, but what differentiates us from the actual suicides is the submission to such thoughts and the corresponding action. The reason why there are many means by which people kill themselves is the negotiation process. The devil can negotiate with one to go to the top of the building and jump down, and to the other, he can negotiate to take a gun and blow the brains out; there are so many means to such fatal end, it’s all a negotiation process; that is why the condition of the heart is very important. The devil came and tempted Jesus after he had fasted for forty days and forty nights; in the second temptation, the devil attempted to negotiate with Jesus to practically commit suicide. Matthew 4:5-6 says,
“Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in theirhands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.”
The devil led him to the highest point on the temple and made a negotiation with him to jump down, of course, that would mean death. This is where the condition of the heart comes in and the reason why it is very important, Jesus answered him and said, “It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” This means that the heart of Jesus was adequately filled and furnished with the word of God, that is the reason why the devil could not accomplish his aim.
The Suicide Process
We can then deduce the art of suicide to comprise of the following processes:
1. The Cause or Trigger
There has to be a reason behind all actions. You can’t just go and slap somebody for no reason, you can’t just go and shoot somebody for no reason, you can’t just kill yourself for no reason, there has to be a trigger either internal or external. A trigger that has led to the death of many young individuals in the US is bullying. Young chaps go and kill themselves because they can’t take it any longer. I have watched many video clips on the suicides of such bullying victims. Financial crisis is also a trigger for many. I watched the video of a former multimillionaire who killed himself by ingesting a deadly substance in a courtroom after being sentenced to jail for faking a fire outbreak in his house to get insurance claims because he had gone broke. There are many people who have killed themselves because of this, especially as a result of the global financial meltdown. There are numerous triggers that lead to the suicidal negotiation and action, it all depends on the condition of the individual’s heart and his/her relationship with God. I watched the news of a woman who had about fifty orgasms each day, she couldn’t take it any longer and so she killed herself. In the case of Jesus, he had just fasted for forty days and forty nights and was very hungry and weak, that was the devil’s entry point to negotiate with him; but of course, you cannot tempt the Lord your God.
2. The Negotiation
When there is a cause or a trigger, the devil then comes and negotiates with the individual based on the effects of such trigger on the individual. Like every other form of negotiation, agreements will be reached based on discussions and compromise. Based on the negotiation, the individual might come to his/her senses and not agree to the terms of the suicidal negotiation; but this depends on the condition of the individual’s heart. The negotiation will involve reasons (based on those triggers) why the best way to end all the suffering is to take one’s life. A lot of negotiations will go on in the mind of the individual and it is only when the heart of that individual is sound that agreements will not be made. It is during this process that different suicidal ideas come into the person’s mind depending on which means is most feasible at that particular point in time. For instance, if there is a gun in that house during the process of this negotiation, there is high probability of that gun being a ready means for the action. Also, if the person is working at a very high floor in a tall building, at that point, jumping down would be an option. Again, if the person is in the kitchen or any part of the house, any knife or sharp object would be an option, even a rope would be an option for the thought of hanging. Also, if the person always takes the train, jumping into the tracks would be a ready option. Trust me, the devil is very good at this, his major negotiating factor is to magnify the absence of hope in that situation. Once the individual is convinced that there is no hope, it is finished, but of course, as long as there is life, there is always hope.
3. The Action
Finally, after all negotiations have taken place, agreements or disagreements will be made; this is the corresponding action. When an agreement is arrived at, then the individual commits suicide by whatever means negotiated with. It is important to note that there is always hope, always. As long as God lives, there will always be hope for any situation; once the individual can realize this, there is no way the suicidal action will be carried out. That is why when somebody goes to the top of the building and attracts attention, people will always gather and mostly try to convince that person that there is hope. The police will come and send a negotiator up there that will try and talk that person out of it. The only reason why an individual will not proceed with the suicidal action is that he/she has come to the right senses and realized that there is hope.
From the Mind of the Suicidal
As we have seen above, there has to be a trigger for such suicidal negotiations to even take place in the first instance before the action is completed. A few days ago, I went to my sister to find out the kind of negotiations that went through her head in those days. She said she felt justice was not done and she was wrongly disciplined, she said that she felt the punishment given to her far exceeded what she had done. She said she felt unloved and that nobody trusted her or wanted to believe her and so she read a book that gave an option of cutting oneself to relieve her of the pain. She said that was the reason why she would go to the kitchen and take a knife. I then asked her what was running through her mind as she held the knife and why she never cut, stabbed or killed herself at the end of the day. She said at those points she realized the following facts; that she was a child of God, she didn’t give herself life, so she couldn’t take it and it didn’t make sense to injure her own self. She said whenever she thought of suicide, just by looking at the firmament, the clouds and other works of nature, she remembered the creator (God).
Like I explained earlier, there must be a trigger, the negotiation and the corresponding action. The reason why she never agreed to the terms of the negotiation was that she believed in God. As children, we were all brought up in the knowledge of God so whether we liked it or not, we knew that there was God (at least, if we didn’t know anything else). God plays an indispensable role in our lives as long as we believe in Him.
Suicide Prevention Attempts
When a person stands at the top of a building or any high point trying to jump to his/her death, such acts usually attract the attention of passersby, majority of which try to encourage the person not to jump. The attention of the police and firefighters is called and further attempts are made to talk the person out of it or break the person’s fall. The truth is, how many of such attempts do you want to stop? It is important that we go back to the source of life, which is God. Suicide is not a normal event, it is a supernormal event funded by the devil and his agents. You can try by physical means, but it is impossible to fight the spiritual with the physical. That is why the suicide rate is still increasing. I have seen anti-suicide signposts and measures on the streets and other relevant points to help prevent suicide, these are beautiful measures, but as long as the devil is in control, there would be other means.
Imagine if Jesus was in control of all our lives, it would be impossible to hear of suicide stories. The greatest suicide prevention attempt is for us to preach the love of Christ into the hearts of people, that is the only way we can put an end to it. This means that Christians play a very important role in the accomplishment of this goal by our relationship with people; and through our love and our message of Christ, we would heal the brokenhearted and the emotionally depressed. We must learn to walk in love and encourage people, you just never know what people are going through. A major problem is that people rarely have someone they can confide in and pour their hearts to. We are representatives of Christ here on earth, the world should be able to find solace in our love, which would help them, change them and bring them to Christ.
Summary and Recommendations
In the end analysis, the thought of suicide is just a mechanism of the devil to speed up the destruction process of mankind. It is a shortcut and highway to hell. It is virtually impossible for a true Christian to take his/her own life. Suicide victims are majorly ungodly people, who do not believe in God nor reverence Him. There is no how you would believe in God, especially if you are a Christian that you would take your own life, it is possible for such ideas to flash through the mind, but it is impossible for the idea to be nurtured, talk less of action.
I am writing this because I know there is somebody out there going through tough times and facing battles in life; and thinking of ending the pain and struggles by taking his/her life. I understand how it feels when there is nobody to talk to, when there is nobody that understands, when you’re all alone in your struggles, when it seems like nobody cares; but in all this, I want you to know that God cares and all He wants is for you to cast your cares on Him (1 Peter 5:17). As long as there is life, there is hope, you must never forget that. Suicide must never be an option. If you think death is the solution, then you must consider that there is life after death, eternal suffering or peace. You will most definitely suffer and burn eternally if you kill yourself, this is no joke at all.
It is important that we learn to cast our cares upon the Lord and learn to trust Him. It is important that we understand that many might be the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord will deliver him out of them all (Psalm 34:19). Let us take a look at the words of Jesus in Luke 12:22-29, it says,
“And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.”
Then in verse 31 he says,
“But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
The worst that the devil can do to a Christian is to tempt and afflict the person with lusts, pride, sicknesses, etc., but he can never make a Christian fall by suicide, it is impossible. A Christian can only destroy himself through sin and temptations, but never suicide, he can’t even try it, in fact, it just doesn’t even make sense. The point is, if you don’t believe in God and you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and saviour, the devil will easily overwhelm you by the issues of life. He will easily manipulate your heart and negotiate with you for your own express destruction. Why should business failure make you kill yourself? Why should heartbreak make you kill yourself? Why should bullying make you kill yourself? You need to accept Jesus right now, not even today, right now! He said he stands at the door and knocks, and if any man will hear his voice and open the door, he would come in (Revelation 3:20). Think about it, it could happen to anybody, it all depends on the magnitude of the trigger and the condition of the individual’s heart at that particular point in time. As a matter of fact, it’s not just all about suicide, the devil could still lead you into actions that will still destroy you without you taking your own life. This is why you need Jesus in your life.
If you are ready to accept him, please say this prayer with me,
“Lord Jesus, I humbly come before you today, please forgive and have mercy on me for all my sins, both consciously and unconsciously. I acknowledge I’ve gone astray, I acknowledge I’m unworthy, please come into my life even as I accept You as my lord and personal saviour; write my name in the book of life. From today, I cast all my cares on you and I promise to put all my trust in you. Help me to remain faithful and steadfast till the end, amen.”
Please dear, don’t ever think of taking your own life, you deserve better because Jesus loves you and always will. Now that you have accepted him, just trust in him with all your heart and he will carry you through (Proverbs 3:5). Connect with other brothers and sisters in Christ, there are many Christian organizations like “The 700 club” (www.cbn.com) and others that could join you in prayer and counsel you no matter what you are going through. You can also contact me at any time via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and I’ll always be there by God’s grace to talk with you.
Cheers and God bless you infinitely!!!
