There is a time and season for every purpose under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8), but our adversary the devil is going about as a roaring lion seeking whom to devour. The aim is to derail us from fulfilling purpose and one of the devil’s major devices in achieving this is through distractions. Hence, many of us have been so distracted by the devil that we can’t see that we are running out of time.

Greatest regrets

An old woman was asked what her greatest regrets were and she said it was the things she wanted to do that she never did. In essence, it’s not the things (bad or wrong) she did, but the things she had the passion to do that she didn’t do. She spent most of her life just existing, and when she got old, she only had regrets.

Greatest enemy

Our greatest enemy on paper may be the devil, but we must understand his devices (2 Corinthians 2:11). Revelations 12:12 says there is pity for those on earth because the devil knows his time is short. This is one of the things that gives the devil an upper hand over us. The devil’s major device is distractions. Once he can distract you from your purpose, you run out of time and be like the old woman who just came to exist on earth and end up living the rest of our lives with regrets.

Our purpose on earth is time bound (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). Even our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ came to fulfill a time bound mission on earth and ascended back to heaven at the age of 33. He didn’t have the time to live to a ripe old age and make babies and start a family. Remember that the devil also attempted to distract Jesus and deviate him from his purpose (Luke 4:1-13). The average human doesn’t understand time and this is because of the distractions the devil has set in the way of redeeming time.

Danger of Distractions

In 2010, God gave me a song that was directed at President Goodluck Jonathan. I couldn’t edit or change the lyrics of the song as it was direct from the Holy Spirit with the name “Jonathan” mentioned 3 times. I was afraid to record and release the song because of the distractions around me as summarized below. In 2011, Goodluck Jonathan lost the presidential election, making that song useless for production, reference or impact at that time. However, there may just still be hope for a future release as Goodluck Jonathan is making headlines with regards to the 2023 presidential elections.

I have gone 17months now without publishing a single article. When asked why? I always replied, “No time” It’s so bad that I run out of time doing things that are just a complete waste of time. This is not just a case of time management, but more of case of being weighed down by the distractions of life.

Let me tell you how dangerous distractions are. As a child of God, we all know that God has given us authority over the devil and nothing shall by any means harm us right? But even the untouchable Job was distracted to the point that he spoke his fears into existence (Job 3:25). He broke the hedge and the devil was finally able to attack him. This would be discussed in another article.

Distracting Distractions

Let’s go to the family circle, so many spouses no longer have that spark they had when they just started. What changed? They just got carried away by the distractions of existence. Hence, the devil draws them away to be tempted by extra marital affairs and divorce. Jesus said to the church of Ephesus, “thou hast left thy first love” (Revelations 2:1-5). They were doing great and Jesus commended them, but they got carried away by distractions, like most our churches today are majorly distracted by the love of money.

Many of us have greatness hidden inside but there are so many distractions suppressing these hidden potentials. Let’s summarize these distractions a little further:

  • Fear of failure: This is the father of all distractions. Many of us are on this table. We have so many dreams and aspirations but we are afraid to even initiate anything because we are afraid to fail. The fear of failure is the greatest threat to achievements in life. This then leads us to the next distraction, which is why many are afraid to fail in the first place.
  • Opinions of people: The major reason why many are afraid to fail is because of what people would say or think. They are conscious of opinions and human gestures, not wanting to be laughed at or scorned. Imagine what the Wright brothers, inventors of the first successful airplane, went through in 1903. Noah must have been mocked and scorned when he was building the ark as directed by God. If they considered or gave in to public opinions, they won’t be in the history books by now. Christiano Ronaldo wouldn’t be the Football Greatest of All Time (GOAT) today if he focused on his critics. Many intending God ordained marriages have been destroyed before they even started because they wanted to do a Great White Wedding, when the Bible only endorses a Traditional Wedding. This is all in the name of public opinion.
  • Lusts: 1 John 2:15-16 warns us about the love for the things of this world which are summarized in the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. These lusts distract us from the love of God and His purpose for us on earth. Look at many churches today, the focus is no longer on the gospel and love of Christ, but rather on making money and material possessions. We all know the situation of things in Nigeria right now, but let me tell you, they are all distractions to the child of God, and we must not be carried away because the Bible tells us that when they cast us down, we would say there is a lifting up (Job 22:29).

Find your purpose and start

You must first have a dream and purpose before you can be distracted. So, what are your dreams? What are your aspirations? You must dream first. Then you must shut your ears and eyes to the lusts and distractions of this life. Finally, start achieving, start loving, start writing, start singing, start whatever you have passion for. If you had started and stopped along the way, pick up from where you left off. The greatest danger is to be overcome by the distractions of this life and end up running out of time. May it never be too late for us to redeem the time in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Cheers and God bless you infinitely!!!
