The funny thing about dreams is that they just keep getting more and more interesting, confusing, elusive, distracting, deceitful and evasive but still remain as potent as the father of seven boys. Today, we’ll be discussing on the dream that led Gideon to victory against the Midianites with just 300 men like in the movie ‘300’. When you understand the potency of dreams, a simple dream is enough to make you move mountains. Although people are now dabbling into the unconscious nature of dreams and diluting them, making it a form of relaxation, you will still know which is from God or not as long as you are working with the Holy Spirit.
Now after the reign of Deborah as the judge of Israel, the children of Israel went and did evil in the sight of God again, and this time, God delivered them into the hand of Midian; which seriously dealt with them mercilessly. They cried unto God and He heard their cries; this is where Gideon came in. God chose Gideon to liberate the children of Israel and He sent an angel to commission Gideon for the mantle. It is of high importance to note that Gideon had already asked for three heavenly signs confirming his mantle before accepting it. The first sign was with the angel and the last two were with God (Judges 6).
I remember the time I watched the movie ‘300’ it just reminded me of the story of Gideon and gave me a visual image of their valour and might; the only difference was that there were no casualties when God fought with Gideon as against Leonidas (Gerard Butler) who fell with all his men, saving one who had earlier returned.
Having accepted the mantle, Gideon gathered the people ready for battle, totaling 32,000 men, but they were just too much. In God’s opinion, when they won the battle, they would have attributed their victory to their number and not the power of God, taking God’s glory. So God instructed that they be reduced, as a result, they were screened from 32,000 down to 10,000, and then finally all the way down to 300 (Judges 7:1-7).
After God had confirmed their victory with those 300 men, there was one last bus stop. Look at what God said to Gideon in Judges 7:9-11,
“And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand. But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host: thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.”
We can see that God understood that Gideon definitely still had the right to be afraid, so He directed him to a final bus stop, a hearing that would confirm everything, a hearing that would rewrite the course of history, God directed Gideon to the confirmation of his victory by the hearing of a dream!!! Judges 7:13-15 says,
“And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along. And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host. And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.”
Gideon immediately proceeded into battle based on the hearing of that dream and the Bible in Judges 7:16 – 8:28 tells us that the land was in peace for forty good years through the reign of Gideon.
This episode is highly unique in comparison to other episodes because in this case, Gideon had not only heard directly from God, he also received direct confirmation from God and an angel through the manifestation of signs. When I initially started this series, in the first episode, Dreams as a Major Spiritual Feedback Mechanism, I embraced other spiritual feedback mechanisms like visions, prophecies and the direct voice of God. Gideon did not only hear the direct voice of God, he was also visited by an angel of the LORD and then received the manifestation of three heavenly signs. Despite all these, God still had to direct him to hear a dream and its interpretation confirming His word before Gideon could finally proceed to victory.
