In the first episode of this series, we used John the Baptist as a case study. We talked about how he meddled into Herod’s business which was none of his concern and how he paid dearly for it. Today, we would be focusing on Miriam and Aaron, Moses’ elder siblings. It’s a short story, but there’s a lot to learn about minding our business from it.

Miriam and Aaron

We already know that they were both Moses’ siblings. Apparently, they were also ministers of God, Miriam was a prophetess (Exodus 15:20) and Aaron was a priest (Exodus 28:1). Let us now see how they meddled into Moses’ business, which was none of their concern. Besides, God never led them to do so; they did so out of selfishness and inferiority complex.

Let us go to Numbers 12:1-2 to see what exactly happened:

“And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.”

Moses married an Ethiopian woman and they went against him for it. In fact, they started exhibiting inferiority complex by trying to raise themselves to the level of Moses and compare themselves with him. In their minds, they were jealous at why Moses could just do anything he wanted and they couldn’t, they started comparing themselves with him, all because he married an Ethiopian woman.

The Aftermath

After going against Moses and meddling into his private affairs, God came in. In Numbers 12:3-16, we would see everything that went down, but the summary of the whole matter is that at the end, they got their reward. Verses 7-10 say:

“My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak mouth to, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed. And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous.”

Miriam and AaronMiriam became leprous just because she did not mind her business, Aaron then started begging Moses; and even after Moses prayed to God to heal her, God was still reluctant, look at what verse 14 says,

“And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again.”

Facts and Summary

Meddling with another man’s business is not pleasing to God at all. In the world today, there is a lot of nonsense going on in the church, a lot of rivalry, hypocrisy and all sorts. As true worshippers of Christ, it is our duty to speak up and speak the truth, but it is the truth that you know that would set you free; and that truth would be made known to you by the Spirit. There is a difference between meddling with another man’s business and speaking the truth according to God’s will.

When you dabble into another person’s business, there would usually be found traces of selfishness, jealousy and pain; this means that, you would be doing it to satisfy your own lusts. But when the truth is revealed according to the leading of the Spirit, it would be edifying to the body of Christ and not in any way self-oriented.

There is a guy that I know to be a liar and a qualified crook. He has tried to deceive me many times, but has failed every time because of the Holy Spirit in me that reveals the truth. One day, I went to the abode of my buddies just get something and I saw this guy. Immediately I saw him, I just knew that he was up to something. After he left, I then asked them how they knew him and what he came for, they said he claimed to be in need of a place to stay just for a week, because he was renting his own apartment; this was the exact same trick he used on people. They had already fallen for it, but they didn’t know what they had fallen into. They, being my buddies, whom I cared for, I had to tell them the truth to protect them, even they had already noticed my facts based on the lies he had already told them in a day. The guy kept lying to them about everything and deceiving them. Even though he did accomplish his aim to a large extent, using and dumping them, at least, they now know the truth, and their eyes are now opened. Now, I have seen that same guy duping other people and never for once did I even make an attempt to interfere, that’s because God didn’t send me on any such errand.

When you are led by the Spirit, nothing would be done for selfish motives, this way, the actual truth will be revealed, and sound judgments made. In the story of Moses above, God was the one who personally dealt with Miriam and Aaron. The costs of being a busybody far outweigh the petty benefits.

Mind your business today!

Cheers and God bless you infinitely!!!
