Money can buy all material things like cars, planes, ships, women, positions and all forms of luxury, but money can never buy wisdom, money can never buy perfect love and money can never buy the breath of life. This article seeks to sensitize and bring to the remembrance of all human beings, the fact that we are all but dust and to the dust shall we all return. Also, we are living souls, and after the flesh returns to the dust, the spirit goes back to God and the soul which is eternal would be left to face judgment and would be subjected to either eternal peace or eternal suffering in hell. This sensitization was fuelled by the very recent demise of popular Nigerian musician, Goldie Harvey, reminding us that death is no gentle man and is no respecter of persons. As Christians, it is not our portion to be poor, we have actually been given dominion from God, a direct order from above. We are therefore advised to make our hearts right with God, our maker, and live holy and acceptable lives before Him, putting Him first in all we do, and all other things will be added unto us. All verses of the Bible quoted were taken from the King James Version.
According to Wikipedia, Susan Oluwabimpe Filani aka Goldie Harvey was born on the 23rd of October, 1983. She was a Nigerian professional singer, and was married to Andrew Harvey. She graduated from the University of Sunderland in 2007 with a BA in Business Management. A major highlight in her life that brought her to further limelight was her participation in the recent Big Brother Africa Reality TV Show in 2012. Many sources, including tweets and posts from the late musician’s Twitter and Facebook accounts have confirmed her death. She was reported to have died on Thursday, 14th February, 2013 (Valentine’s Day), just shortly after arriving from the United States of America (USA) where she attended the Grammy Awards. She was said to have complained of a severe headache and was rushed to the hospital (Reddington Hospital to be precise) where she was confirmed dead.A precious life has been lost and so my deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the departed and I pray that God gives them the fortitude to bear their loss.
The Phenomenon of Death
Wikipedia defines death as the permanent cessation of all biological functions that sustain a living organism. According to Wikipedia, common causes of death include biological ageing, predation, malnutrition, disease, suicide, murder and accidents or trauma resulting in terminal injury. After death, bodies of living organisms begin to decompose.
These days, it almost feels impossible to think that such wealthy and famous people could die. I mean, look at Michael Jackson for instance, I couldn’t believe my ears. One of the most shocking news was the death of Dagrin, a very popular young Nigerian rapper, others include: Sam Loco Efe, Enebeli Elebuwa, Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Yakowa, former National Security Adviser, Andrew Owoye Azazi, and former Nigerian President, Umar Musa Yar’Adua, among many others, who died of natural causes (at least those we are aware of). You see, to be murdered in cold blood is one thing, but to die of natural causes like sicknesses, accidents, etc., without any physical intentional input is a proof of a higher and superior force. The truth is, death is no respecter of persons, death doesn’t care the age, whether it is an infant, a baby, a teenager, a youth, or an adult; death is no respecter of persons. It is therefore important that we all get this clear and come to the reality that we are all but dust. The only force and power that death respects and has no choice than to bow to, is our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He is the only one that has defeated death and He said in Revelation 1:18, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”
I personally have witnessed death, not once, not twice; I have seen my soul fly out of my body to the point that I was trying to get back to it on the bed. I have gotten to points where the littlest breath was sufficient for me, and many other situations; and I tell you boldly that death is no respecter of persons, save the name of Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11).
The Nature of Man
Genesis 2:7 gives us the complete nature of man, it says, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” From this, we can derive that the human being comprises of three major components:
1. The Body
2. The Spirit
3. The Soul
God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and after the fall of man, God further confirmed our nature in Genesis 3:19 saying, “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” You see, man is simply a soul, fuelled by the Spirit (the breath of life), living in a body (a sack of dust) making him a living soul. When man dies, the body goes back to the dust, the Spirit (the breath) goes back to God and the soul is eternal, it would then be judged. The bible calls man a living soul. It is the soul that will face judgment, it is the soul that will either burn forever in hell or enjoy forever in the presence of God, in the mansions that the Lord has prepared for us (John 14:2).
The love for money, fame and power has so much taken over the earth that humans now forget what and who they really are. In the aspect of what, we are just but dust, but in the aspect of who, we are gods (John 10:14), living souls (Genesis 2:7), the temple of the Holy Ghost (1 Corinthians 6:17).
Jesus gave a very important warning in Matthew 10:28, He said “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Our lusts have so much taken over us that we have no respect for our maker anymore. The Bible tells us that hell and destruction are never full (Proverbs 27:20). The truth is that more and more deaths will occur, it is an inevitable occurrence without respect of persons; but the question is, is your heart right with God? Have you forgotten your maker? Are you like the rich fool? (Luke 12:16-21). Have money, fame, power and other lusts become your gods? (Exodus 20:3). It is important that we come to our senses and draw back to God. The Bible says in Psalm 9:17, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”
There are numerous verses in the Bible that tell us about how frail and fragile we are. Psalm 1:4-7 says,
“The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.” Imagine, a human being classified as “chaff”.
David, in Psalm 8:4 said,
“What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?”
Even Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP) would always make this declaration at the end of every episode of their soap operas, “We are nothing but pencils in the hands of the creator”
Even though Solomon said that money answers all things (Ecclesiastes 10:19), those things being referred to, are material things like cars, planes, ships, women, luxury, etc. Money cannot buy the breath of life, money can’t buy perfect love, money can’t buy wisdom, money can’t buy God; even though you take the person to the best hospital in the world, when death comes, just say goodbye to all the money, eternity begins. The deceased could afford a plane ticket to USA to attend the Grammys, cruise in luxurious limos, stay in 5-star hotels, she was even said to have been registered under a private hospital which she was rushed to immediately the incident occurred; but her money could not buy her life.
Paul spoke his mind in Romans 7: 7-25, from verse 14-23, he said,
“For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.”
This was the mighty Apostle Paul! I know it isn’t as easy as it is preached to live a holy life.
I remember back in school when I was in 200 level, I was invited for the cell meeting of a popular church, I reluctantly went because I didn’t like the way they dressed there, especially ladies; they were always so seductive. Getting close to the venue, it turned out it was just a gathering of about 5 people, so I finally consented to go. On getting there, there were about 4 girls; I don’t remember seeing any guy, except the guy I went with. As usual, they had lived up to their expectation, dressing seductively; but the particular dressing and countenance of one of them was so tempting and seductive that I didn’t spend up to 5minutes there, I ran away, I knew I couldn’t deceive myself. Even though I just wanted to fellowship with God, my flesh was telling me another thing. One very funny incident I can never forget was a long time ago, when I was leading a choir. One Saturday, during choir practice, I was in front directing when one the female choristers stretched out her arms to the sky and her top pulled down, and staring at me were her bare busts, inside the house of God! The devil is a liar!
The love of money is said to be the root of all evil, according to 1 Timothy 6:7. It says,
“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
That is why Solomon prayed a very important prayer in Proverbs 30:7-9, it says,
“Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.”
This is the major problem that many are having. When they have little, they curse God and when they have excess, they forget and deny God.
It is actually not our portion as Christians to be poor, but the love of money is the root of all evil. That is why Jesus in Matthew 6:31-33 says,
“Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
There is no argument about this, wealth and riches belongto us, but we need to seek God first and establish our love for Him.
Everybody goes through one weakness and one temptation or the other, but the good news is, we have a saviour who died for our sins, Jesus Christ who constantly makes intercession for us, and whose blood constantly cleanses, purges and speaks better things than the blood of Abel (Hebrews 12:24); who has told us that his grace is sufficient for us, for his strength is make perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). We then need to play our own parts by believing on him and trying our best to live holy and acceptable lives before the Lord, we need to ask for more grace and mercy, we need to humble ourselves before the Lord and ask for more faith. Lastly, we need the Holy Spirit to be the captain of our lives, to help us and guide us all through.
Conclusion and Recommendations
A young lady is gone, not the first and definitely won’t be the last, but a precious life has been cut short. Are we better than she was? Or are we better than the many thousands who die daily? Definitely not, but we are all saved by grace; yet shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? (Romans 6:1). God loves us so much, that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever might believe in him would not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). The Bible says in John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”It is not our portion to be poor and wretched, God has given us dominion over all things, but we need to put Him first in all our endeavors, making Him our major priority, and all other things will be added unto us.
Always study the word of God, pray and commune with your maker, praise and glorify God in everything you do, make the Holy Spirit your best friend and let him teach you all things, always reverence God and run to Him in times of trouble and iniquity, confess your sins before the Lord; put Him first and all other things will be added to you. He said in Isaiah 1:18,
“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”
God knows our hearts and that is why He says “Come now, and let us reason together” No matter how grievous you think your sins are, you have seen the word of the Lord above, they would be wiped out.
Moreover, if you haven’t received Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal saviour, you need to do that now, for nobody knows tomorrow, and as we have seen; death is no respecter of persons. The Bible says in John 1:12,
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
If you’re ready to accept Christ today, kindly say this prayer with me:
“Lord Jesus, I humbly come before you today, please forgive and have mercy on me for all my sins, both consciously and unconsciously. I acknowledge I’ve gone astray, please come into my life even as I accept You as my lord and personal saviour; write my name in the book of life and help me to remain steadfast till the end, in Jesus’ name, amen.”
Congrats on receiving Christ today!
Cheers and God bless you infinitely!!!
